OK, so I have insomnia. I really do. It's been for about 4-5 days. In the last two days I have gotten a total of 9 hours sleep. Adam's in Italy until the 9th, and well even though I am not sleeping, I am being crazy productive - both work and personal projects.
Work: It's hard to sum up all the planning and marketing/promotions I am attempting to do for Metropolis. Let's see...
The Metropolis SITE SPECIFIC Tour
I am planning a 25 location national design tour, which we entitles The Metropolis SITE SPECIFIC Tour, where we will visit 25 architecture and design firms all over the U.S. and Canada between March and December. That means from April on, I'll be hitting up many cities including D.C., Minneapolis, St. Paul, Chicago, Miami, Sarasota, Atlanta, San Francisco, L.A., Dallas, Vancouver, Toronto, and even Honolulu.
Global Warming Teach-In
The 2010 Imperative Global Emergency
Teach-In addressing global warming and climate change is an interactive web-cast broadcast
live from New York, reaching more than
500,000 students, faculty, deans and
practicing professionals in the architecture,
planning and design communities in both
North and South America. We're a big part of it, and frankly, you should be too. So sign up for the web cast here: http://www.2010imperative.org/
Next Generation Competition
Yesterday our judges picked the winner and 14 runners-up of this years competition, focussing on ENERGY. Stay tuned to Metropolis May 2006 issue to find out who won $10,000 to realize their idea! I'm just now starting to plan the winner's celebration in April, and our Metropolis ICFF booth will exhibit the projects.
Metropolis at the ICFF
We've decided on a booth design by a great firm in NYC. The design is a living showcase of form, function and sustainability. it consits of a light-weight monolithic skeletal structure, framed in an eggcrate assembly of interlocking recycled/recyclable white plastic fins. No two cells are the same. A new 100% recycled white polyethylene sheet material (UHMWPE) is replacing PVC in green buildings, and will be used here. Cut by water-jet (no chemicals involved) a series of thin and flexible curving fins will be created that when assembled, produce the rigid single-body chassis of the METROPOLIS booth. Intrigued? Stay tuned...
Workload
I was starting to get nervous about all the spring planning and events, shows, tours, travel. It's overwhelming, especially when planning a wedding. We just found out our old receptionist is interested in filling in for my other 1/2 in marketing here (Allison is about to have a baby in April), and well - it will be an easy transition, and she's an awesome girl. So I am breathing a little better these days. Still not sure why I am not sleeping though.
NOW...for the fun stuff!
Jasper, Moving and Changes
We're planning a big suburban move. Can you believe it? This city girl? No way! Actually I'm starting to get excited about the thought of it. The commute is not that bad at all, and more time to read and groove to the iPod. Jasper isn't yet too informed, he's not really convinced we're moving to be with him. But sooner or later, he'll get it. He's doing really well in 3rd Grade, and just being a truly normal kid. I've been reading this:
It's great. Really helps you to understand the kid's thinking. I'm excited to get our move on, even though the wedding is coming and planning will be a little tougher. We need a car, too.
Travel
Adam is in Milan and working a good amount, but he's getting to see some great things, I am sure. I've been thinking about Italy a lot since he's been there. I miss Florence. Teh other night, I read my entire journal back from 1998. I was a freak! Anyhow, I can't wait for him to get home to me. I miss him.
In addition to a quick trip to Vegas for work next month, I plan to visit my sister in Venice, CA in early March and Adam and I may get to go to Dublin in April while Jasper is in Aspen with this grandparents. It's going to be busy for me, so I'll need to find out ASAP to book and plan time away from work. But I'm excited. I just wish I had a friend coming with me to Vegas, the workload there will be so minimal, I'll get bored by myself.
AND NOW FOR The Wedding
It's wedding planning time, and well, I decided to just stop holding things off. I met w/ our photographer choice. And well, they were awesome. I am awaiting a contract, and we need to decide on two custom packages. Just waiting on the cash flow to secure the DJ, as well. Other items I am looking into include a Photobooth, popcorn cart, and I think we decided to have sapling trees as favors for guests to plant after the wedding, you know me...always trying to help the environment. I have to wait until June to see my dress. Anxious. But, it will come before I know it.
Other projects
I want to start drawing again. With Adam in Italy it has me thinking about when I was there in 1998, and how much I was drawing when I was there. It was almost everyday! So I went and got some charcoals and new sketch book. We'll see what happens.
I'm sure there's more I can say, but this is taking too long. Sigh...back to work. I hope I sleep tonight.
It hit me hard on Monday--the cold from hell. I guess finally while I gave my condolences to all those who had this the last few weeks, it came a-knockin' on my door. And just in time! The same day I started to feel the monster take over, my fiance left on a plane to SF for Macworld. Weee! I've been home the last two days, serious lack of energy with utter weakness all over. At least the iPhone came out.
But, I'd rather see an unlocked version of iPhone that would work w/ any provider. Or atleast more than 1.
OK, I feel all geeky - I'm delirious.
My dog is chasing her tail. I think it's time to put in a movie.
I need to get to work tomorrow, I must.
I'm sitting in our anniversary photo exhibit that we put up for this event. Alone, only about 10 visitors this morning. Last night was much more energetic though - the lobby had a reception with awful Campari drinks. YUCK! Well, things could be worse, we hit the McD's drive through on the way home as we all missed dinner. YUM! Nothing like a Filet-O-Fish after art events! Check out my show set so far here. Moss had some great stuff.
Emily arrived tonight. We'll get nice and silly, like this:
If you came with a warning label, what would it say?

This one's pretty easy. Mine would simply say, "WARNING: Hot Lead"
What would the title of your autobiography be?

How Hot is the Lead?
How did you pick your Vox name? Does it mean something?

THE STORY OF HOTLEAD: Once upon a time, there was a little girl named Kimberly. She rode her bike all over the neighborhood, swung off vines into the pond, snuck into the big kid's tree house, threw rocks at the neighborhood geek (and then got beat up by him), and she'd ride home fast as her mom screamed her and her sister's names for dinner each night. Oh what a wonderful childhood. One summer, her neighbor started to make homemade fishing lures out of molten lead in his garage. He would heat the lead in a pot, and pour it into lure molds that would immediately harden with the oxygen in the air. Kimberly loved watching this process, usually as she tried balancing on a soccer ball, or hopping on a Pogoball®. Her mother always told her not to go into the neighbor's garage while he was working with the molten lead. It was very dangerous. Her mother would say, "If I catch you in that garage after I have told you not to, you're goin' to get it." Kimberly was scared. But not scared enough to not go play in the garage with overwhelming curiosity. One day, in the garage, as her neighbor was pouring the lead, Kimberly tripped over a basketball, and stumbled toward the worktable. Lead splattered everywhere. It even landed on Kimberly's right hand. Ouch! Instantly, the lead hardened, and she picked off the oddly shaped pieces. It left a major burn on her hand, but she thought it was really cool. She hid her burn from her mother for almost a week, so she wouldn’t know her daughter was playing where she was told not to. Bad Kimberly! Bad! Her mother finally saw the burn and was angry, but also felt bad since she knew it was a pretty serious injury. It was finally treated, but left a really neat scar! 12 years later, at a raging party in Brooklyn on 14 Meadow Street, a very cool young lady had pointed out Kimberly's scar, and asked, "What happened to you there? How did you get that?" Kimberly told the story of the lead in the garage. Many people gathered around to listen. After the story was complete, the very cool, young lady jumped up onto a chair, and yelled, "HOTLEAD!" From then on, Kimberly was also known as HotLead. And, in fact, to this day, many people only know Kimberly as HotLead. Kimberly became good friends with that cool chick from the party. And to this day, in some areas of Brooklyn you can see the name HotLead tagged on various sidewalks, boarded up buildings and sidewalk fences. Kimberly, AKA HotLead, does not know for sure how they got there, but she has a pretty good idea of who did it. The End.
